Article No. 14
A piece titled Cacophony might feel daunting to explore, but local West Australian composer Nicholas Kyriakacis's new work for string quintet and percussion titled Cacophony in Three Movements is not something to fear. This unique piece, inspired by Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements and Melanie Einzig’s street photograph "Spring Corner”, captures the disjointed soundscape of New York City, exploring themes and interpretations of America from a global perspective.
Nicholas Kyriakacis is a contemporary composer known for his eclectic style. Beginning his musical journey with playing the traditional Greek instrument bouzouki, he shifted to composition in high school. He then studied under James Ledger at the University of Western Australia, specialising in spiritually inspired music. After completing his Bachelor of Music in 2022, he worked with the Australian Youth Orchestra and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, presenting pieces that explore deep, narrative themes.
Spring Corner, New York, Melanie Einzig (2000)
“Spring Corner” by Melanie Einzig, captures the chaotic energy of New York City streets. The photo features diverse characters that include a man with a cockatoo, a couple embracing, and a troubled figure with a garbage bag. Each character's story intersects in this snapshot of urban life. Kyriakacis found this image profoundly cacophonous, reflecting the awkward and unexpected interactions that define urban existence.
Inspired by Stravinsky’s work reflecting the vibrancy of American cities, Kyriakacis’s Cacophony in Three Movements portrays these interactions through music. The piece opens with the fluttering of a sulphur-crested cockatoo, setting the stage for a journey through the streets of New York. Using strings, drumkit, and sampler, the composition jumps between characters, each with their own unique musical motifs. As the characters come closer to meeting, the music becomes increasingly frenetic and cacophonous, culminating in a climax that mirrors the city's lively unpredictability. The juxtaposition of serene and chaotic elements within the piece encapsulates the essence of urban life, making it a rich auditory experience.
